Abstract

This study proposes an innovative framework that enables the shared use of existing bus lanes by both buses and private vehicles. The objective is to enhance the overall efficiency of the transportation network by better utilizing dedicated bus lane infrastructure, without deteriorating the quality of service of bus operations. A key element of this approach is the use of a route reservation system that ensures free-flow conditions and reduces travel times for all road users. Experimental evaluation within a realistic arterial road network demonstrates that the framework significantly reduces travel times, even when some private vehicle drivers do not participate in the reservation system. By examining both static and dynamic demand scenarios, the study highlights the framework's efficacy and its potential as a viable strategy to improve urban mobility for both public and private transport, while addressing congestion challenges in densely populated cities.
