Abstract

Railway operations, conducted in open environments, are significantly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions, frequently leading to substantial delays and cancellations. At present, rail operators face considerable challenges in fully anticipating the effects of forecasted weather and adjusting their services to mitigate these impacts effectively. This paper delves into the intrinsic connections between weather hazards and their consequent impacts on railway systems. It also explores how artificial intelligence (AI) models could be employed to address these challenges. The discussion extends to outline future directions for research and practical applications in this domain. The overarching goal of this approach is to bolster predictive capabilities and refine operational responses, thereby enhancing the resilience and efficiency of rail systems in the face of weather-related disruptions.
