Abstract

Understanding the travel behaviour of people by mode choice is crucial for the evaluation of transport services and to access the efficiency of cities’ transport system. The wide adoption of smartphones enables the possibility to study people’s travel behaviour from smartphone usage. In this paper, we provide an analysis of travel mode choice based on mobile location data from a third-party data seller. We demonstrate the entire process of the analysis from the preparation of data as well as the methodology for adding additional information to cope with data discontinuation because of the nature of the data collection. We then use the data for modelling travel choice behaviour using logistic regression. Some findings include the acceptable distance and time that the individuals are willing to walk and wait while using public transport, perception of time spent on public transport in comparison to car, and so on. The findings from our analysis can be used in several ways, not only for modelling and simulation of a transport system but also as a guideline for future uses of mobile data for transport behavioural analyses
